Hi, I'm a newbie on here and I'm looking for some advice please. I have a Mk 1 XP550, which is sometimes troublesome starting, but at the moment, it's starting okay, and the chain spins, but when I try to cut with it, the chain stops, and smoke comes from beneath the sprocket cover. I'm thinking I need to replace the sprocket, or could it be something else?

Cheers,

Cliff

Chain spur sprocket cut right through by the drive links? Clutch spring (s) or clips broken or missing?

All stuff easy to check first- before you go any further

i would say that it could possibly be a clutch problem either oil contamination or wear or broken clutch springs the only way to find out is to take the side cover off and check as a start point .

It will be a floating rim rather than a spur but as you say easy to check .

Are you saying the chain is spinning on idle? If so, you may have a worn or broken clutch spring.

The chain stopping sounds like the clutch is slipping so possibly the clutch shoes have worn that much they are not gripping the drum sufficiently. It is also possible that something is stopping the shoes extending correctly under centrifugal force.

You should check out the Clutch, drum and rim drive and check the clutch drum bearing whilst you are in there!

Chain drive links sitting between the rim and the drum rather than in the rim itself possibly, brake band broken and rubbing on the drum, bit worrying about the smoke coming from that area, it should be fairly easy after the side cover is removed to see what has been getting hot.
