Here found in Sycamore.....

 

I still get a wee bit confused as to what number wall is what......if anybody (MOnkeyD:001_rolleyes:) wants to take the time to label the walls on this photo to educate us all it would be appreciated.

your shot doesn't allow the oportunity to show wall 1, as it's only a cross section and not vertical.

 

But here goes.........

 

Wall 1 = (not shown) regarded as the weakest defence - This is the plugging of the vascular cells to stop the spread of decay up & down the wood.

 

Wall 2 = (green) is formed by the growth ring to stop the spread inwards ( which is not particularly evident in your sycamores cross section.)

 

Wall 3 = (red) The strongest defence when that section is wounded, up until wall 4 developes.

The ray cells, which in essence, divide the stem up into pie sections. Stopping the spread perpendicular to the axis.

 

Wall 4 = (blue) Created by the laying down of new wood after the wound has occured.

This isolates the old infected wood from the new.

 

Here's what Paint has allowed my limited skills to show......

Thanks to you, for getting me to go over something that should be photovisual in me old grey stuff but possibly isn't.
