New climber gear necessities

Was looking for arb climbing gear to buy and I came across this deal:

Simplifies things for me since I'm not sure on what I'd need. I'm thinking in addition to this I'd want a silky saw, top handle and a couple 40m climbing ropes. I know finding a good harness is important so if you've any input on the one here or others please do.

What’s your budget? There’s everything you need in that kit to get you started but equally there are better harnesses etc out there.

 

I personally wouldn’t be without an art rope guide over the standard cambium saver included in that kit.

I might be wrong but you'll need an extra hitch/friction system in there. One for the wire core and another for whatever rope you'll use.

 

Don't bother with 2 40m ropes, get one 25m and one 45m, that way you're not dragging 45m of rope round a small tree.

And I wouldn't get the rope guide as I prefer a multisaver, but either way that cambium saver is limited.

 

Having said that, I'd take a step back and ask why choose a set if you don't know what you need - is this for starting out, rec climbing, to take on a course? The Treehog to me is the most uncomfortable harness I've ever sat in so not a great starting point in any case. Take time and work it out, rather than buy a load of stuff that's not useful.

It is for a course and also for starting out after. I've decided against getting this and looked elsewhere, it was just difficult because I wasn't sure on all the bits and pieces I would need.

Art rope guide, noted. Budget is under a grand, ideally. Harness wise I've settled on getting this one:

Its worth knowing that if you start working for a company paye then they will provide your climbing kit. 

 

You might also be able to rent gear from the place you are doing your training. 

 

£1000 with get you a fair amount of gear but I would hold off till you know more about what fits you best as a climber.
