395xp cylinder seized

Hi all,

I have a lovely 395xp which has run for me for a few years with irregular use. Home milling and firewood mainly.

I am really careful with my fuel mixing 33:1 and emptying when finished.

The saw ran for an hour or so last weekend and wouldn’t start again. A local dealer says this pot and piston are knackered and quote over £500 to sort it.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Shall I repair the saw? Or chop it in for a new 661 or similar.

Has this happened because of the fuelling issue or is it just general wear and tear the saw is a 2003 model.

Thanks in advance

I would think you may have had an air leak causing it to nip up . Also good quality synth oil at 50:1 would be my choice . As above , I would also get it fixed  ( and the air leak if there is one ) but I would go OEM on a good saw like that . Also , if only used infrequently I would go for an alkylate fuel like Aspen or Husqvarna equivalent .

Sometimes saws develop a big issue such as a split impulse, leaking seal or split manifold. Sometimes you get a partial blockage in the carb. Sometimes it is just a poorly adjusted carb. Sometimes it is just a mix up of a few of these things

395 cylinders are pretty strong and can often be cleaned up with acid, abrasives and a light hone.

If a decent piston is fitted and the engine pressure tested, the carb serviced, the fuel line/filter checked and the tank breather checked and finally the carb is tuned to ensure the carb stopped the saw over revving.

Do these things and you get a saw that is set up correctly and you are an engineer.

Do a few of them and you are a gambler!

Thanks for the replies. My mechanical skill is basic to say the least, Steve has politely said he’s not taking any new work on does anyone have a recommendation for somewhere or someone to have a look?
