Rope wrench tether

Recommended Posts

The idea of the stiff tether is it advances the hitch during accent ... I can't see how your system that as Mike says articulates in three places would benefit climbing on the rope wrench in any way..
sit back would be massive , it won't keep the wrench in front of you , and you have taken two of the three holes on the hitch climber up, I would use the bottom for knee ascender and top hole for tether advancing.

That’s not a stiff tether, it’s an inefficient piece of shit.

Try a real 4SRT stiff tether from Treekit, or better still splash out on a Notch Fusion.

The guys asking for guidance, don’t be fooling him into giving his money to Notch.

I can see how this would be really useful. I’ll often switch between single and double, but when that means removing a double leg tether it’s a bit of a pain. Also means basically dismantling your system up a tree.
So I was thinking about something like this just the other day. As others have said though that flop is no good. Stiff tethers all have a rubber grommet/similar to keep the wrench up a bit. This just helps to ensure that it engages correctly and quickly. In your setup I could potentially see a situation where the wrench doesn’t engage or inverts and releases the friction hitch. Potentially?
A chicane seems a good option for on/off use and it is super smooth with a hitch. Downsides are bulk, and I don’t really like that it’s got a metal ‘tether’. Good option though.

I know a few people who used to used to use a system like this (with a ZZ before the chicane came out) personally it looks like you’ll have to tend the wrench every time you stop ascending away from your hitch/zz etc.

For not a lot of money this looks like a good option-

Simarghu Double Leg Tether from Honey Brothers. The largest equipment specialist in the tree care industry.

I don’t think it’ll put you in massive amounts of danger, but for the sake of a few quid it would be a much smoother setup with something like the above

Thanks for replies.

Mike and Matty going up, the rope wrench isn't in use as such, so 'floppiness' doesn't seem an issue. There's is a small bit of sit back.

Use of middle hole Knee ascender bungee going over my shoulder but I know a lot of people don't do that so it would be an issue. I fix my chest krab to the black krab in the photo , realise that not ideal .

The benefits for me are as I say : easy switching from SRT to MRT and also 'bypassing' the wrench by pulling it in when friction is too much (acts a bit like one of those grommets they were selling to put above a prussik). I find on two rope climbing this happens a fair bit.

Thanks squirrel I think I probably do tend to the wrench to engage it more than I realise - I'll have to look at that.

Treetom you're right I first tried this with a zigzag pre chicane and then didn't get on with stiff tethers (admittedly before they had tether attachment points), but I haven't used a conventional stiff tether for a lot of work for a while cos they're not as adaptable but maybe I should re try them.

squirrel, point on chicane etc is just my thoughts too. I know a lot of folk love it - just a bit much for me, but I 've only used it with a zigzag. .

Just to clarify its not a money saving device. I use it and find it very handy (realise others may not) but I'm concerned I may have missed some safety issues which if people I know are thinking of copying they need to be aware of.

See that’s what I was talking about too. I’ll often pull the wrench into the ‘neutral’ position, when friction is too much. But you shouldn’t be able to pull on the actual hitch with it. Honestly, if you know anyone with a chicane ask for a wee shot of it some time, it might be a good solution for you.

That's the point , your climbing on a single line so the rope wrench needs to be engaged almost immediately which it won't be with a soft tether... it will just flop all over the place... I don't see any advantage at all to what your trying to achieve.
