If Ukraine wants to live in peace then they should not poke the Bear. Ukraine joining NATO is essentially putting the US along the Russian Boarder and I can quite see why Russia is not accepting this

Totally different situations that are beyond any rational comparison. 
The fighting started in 2014 and hadn’t stopped when the Russians upped the ante. The weakness of the west and in particular the cowards within the EU after the 2014 Crimean annexation was an open invitation.
