Good tips here. I do seem to remember that for the CS31 test you are not allowed to use anything to mark/sight your back cut such as twigs or crayon - you are expected to be able to level the back cut by sight. However, these may help you to practise.

Taking the 'ears' out (small cuts to the side of the gob) can help you orientate your back cut though and is quite legitimate for the assessment I think.

Zip the nose (not the 'kickback' area) around from teh base of your gob, don't cut deep just score the bark. make some other cuts for where you intend the hinge to be. make sure your bottom cut of the gob is level. i find a lot of people dont 'drop' their rear hand enough.

oh and practice practice practice.

look at your stumps and figure out why things happened, don't just repeat the saem mistakes, you are not a robot.

I used to live in Ayr, never again.

Ears are an excellent addition as MisterTee says, its severs the fibres so that splitting of the timber is reduced. (not guaranteed though)

most saws have a felling line on them

place saw in back of gog take note of where line is aiming

with chain brake on make a vertical line with the tip of the saw where your back cut wants to stop

do your backcut keeping felling line aiming the same way and stop when you get to your mark and hey presto spot on

if you have a problem keeping your cuts level with the saw turned off put a spirit level on the bar pick up the saw by the front handle and then see how far you need to lift the back one and after several goes you should be able to pick the saw up get it where you think is level and then check bubble

as previosly mentioned the stick thing works for a lot of beginers

hope this made sense

do you mean like this bob? it does'nt cut very good though!!!

That'll be a good one to put in the Stihl suggestion box at the AA show.

We want a small bubble spirit level putting in the decal bit on the side of the recoil casing, oh, can you put in a rev counter as well!
