There was a chap at the last APF show with several  crosscut and pit saws he had reconditioned for show and for sale, they were like new. He may be at the next one? Or details could be in the catalogue of the show - someone might still have a copy.
I saw this guy at the APF too. Spent a good while at his stall actually, chatting too him. I think he was an Aussie or NZ maybe. Can't remember his details though unfortunately. I had a play with a couple of his saws, they were fast. Obviously nothing compared to a chainsaw but impressive nonetheless.

Some interesting historical infos:  apple was the wood of choice

As above. Make one. Use the bit left as a template and then free hand design the grip. Choose a nice wood and make it a nice feature.
Metabo do a great tool for cutting back and polishing metal. You can achieve a mirror finish should you require.
Does it have a peg style handle the other end to make it a 2 man saw if required. ?

Its totally worth buying a curved saw rather than straight - cuts way more efficiently.

Anything made by silky, felco, or even fiskars will be quite reasonable, and for occasional use will last you many years as long as you take care of it. the difference between the high quality tools and the cheap ones is that the teeth are usually laser cut and hardened so they last a lot longer.

the cheap samurai ones dont look too terrible but no idea if the blades are sharpened/hardened properly - this is a case where the price difference between a quality hand saw and a cheap one is minimal - the amount of frustration between a crappy one and a good one will more than make up for the price difference.
