been told today i must send 2 men out with stump grinder because of h&s ?

Who by?

If the operator is properly trained and certificated and you have an acceptable system in place for lone working, then it shouldn't be an issue, imo.

Its no different to using any other piece of equipment alone.

Thats the way I thought it is.

Otherwise you may as well have two people working with every piece of machinery arb related or not.

If its company policy then thats different.

Always a problem with this type of operation. If you can complete a risk assessment and manage the risk then you're fine. The problem is that it can be hard to manage the risk with a heavy machine, that has cutting edges that sends material flying and has an entanglement risk.

I notice the last time we had stump busters out on a site they work by themselves.

The NPTC schedule talks about exclusion zones etc - so there may be times say in more public areas or where other pedrestrian risks exist two person teams may be essential to manage this exclusion zone.

It going to be a matter of careful Site Specific Risk Assessments

And then people wonder why things are getting so expensive!!!!!! thinks its bollox to be honest, like Nige says aslong as people are trained, got the proper gear etc whats the problem. If i had to take some one with me on every stump job it wouldnt be worth doing really.
