I think the distance from the center line of the tension holes  and the back of the slot need to be pretty much the same . I know the slot forward of the holes is longer on the older bar but I don't think that matters . Also the oil hole seems to be in a different position . Might be a problem ?

You should be able to just use this adapter here to make the mounting studs fit the 14mm slot

Use this adapter plate in order to fit 14mm Large Stihl type bars to the mid size Stihl mounting studs which are 12mm.

as well as changing the drive rim over to 404 on the MS661 [you'll have to remember to do this if you change back and forward]

So looks like this isn't a goer. I guess I would also need to change sprocket?
Maybe I'll just buy a 28" bar and a reel of 75dpx chain.
Then my 391 and 661 will be running the same chain.

It is a goer but I reckon not worth the faff - prob is better to buy the 28" bar and reel of chain and keeps life a lot simpler.
