I've read that grey's take the nuts before properly mature hence they don't grow, but not sure how accurate that is.
I've certainly found that to be the case with hazel nuts. Sometimes I've seen trees stripped before the nuts have even reached full size.

I’ve had a row of hazels on my allotment stripped bare by greys. I’d had my eye on them for a couple of weeks as they were still green.
Then one day I looked and they were all gone.

They're little cnuts indeed, best not to get started on the subject of squirrels.

We've noticed that they've recently been having a go at our medlars and edible Hawthorns. Before they're even ripe again; makes it even more frustrating.
