Brake won't disengage unless I push on the side plate. I changed the spring but made no difference. Everything seems as it should except when I try and disengage the chain brake it pushes the side plate out and slips past. Feel like I'm missing something obvious here. not sure the vid shows it well....

Had exactly the same on my 560/562, it was wear on some little grey thing in the mechanism.

I ended up buying two new side plates, not really too pricey.

edit. The 550s are the same part, no difference in size.

It sounds like the quadrant in the hand guard is worn, it is not sitting into the chainbrake fully causing it to jump out which in turn pushes the cover out.

That's exactly what I was going to say. New hand guard is something like 15 quid plus vat

I thought the 560 chain brake wasn't the quadrant type as found on the 346, 357 and many of the 3 series saws.

The ones I have seen have had a stainless latch on the chain brake guard that slides in to the brake cover...a completely different mechanism!

As usual you are correct, all I badly tried to say was there is an engagement issue, which is probably to do with the hang guard, I forgot to ask if the brake band was not broken, they have a habit of breaking where they loop around the knee link joint, sorry for the confusion, old age does not come alone.

Thanks, glad I am not losing it. I did have a 550 like this once. The bit of the cover that houses the latch was just not close enough to the guard not meshing well and couldn't work out if the cover had somehow bent which seemed unlikely.

I sorted the issue by removing a little metal from the top of the covers mount area thus moving the top part of the cover closer to mesh with the guard latch which it did and operated correctly after I did this. A strange one but what I did, however unorthodox, worked.
