Leaves are completely different and there is more and thicker stem than the ivy behind.

If you zoom into the first pic you'll see the difference.

Well they’re both ivy, Hedera Helix underneath and the other one is Hedera Hibernica or Irish Ivy.

 

That’s just with a bit of googling mind, I could be wrong.

I think Micks right. Both ivy. Ivy is a woody stem plant and if left will grow big. Good for the birds and the bees.

Yep, the big plant looks like common Ivy, Hedra helix. The mature leaves are that ovalish shape, without lobes. See here:

Its still Ivy .  Ground cover Ivy changes the shape of its leaf as it climbs . I'm not saying its the same Ivy but Ivy non the less .

It’s strange how little we (the majority of tree workers) know about ivy idents.

I hadn’t a clue until I started googling around about different sorts.

That Irish ivy is a dusty pigeon shit filled nightmare, I suppose because the pigeons eat the berries and crap in the trees so the seeds germinate at the base.

The English stuff is relatively dainty and easy to strip in comparison.

According to Woodland Trust, H hibernica does not climb. I think this could be helix. It switches from lobed creeping stage to unlodbed climbing and flowering stage. Can look like a totally different plant.
