Re me wee 026, I had a brief rummage through the box of bits.

The cylinder has one score that would catch a fingernail, and the piston only has a couple of small nicks to the top outside edge(and I reckon it might be re-usuable?) 

But can, or how? does the crankshaft split to examine and possibly? fit a new bearing, the needle bearings are certainly "in bits" since the connecting rod is very loose, i.e flailing about everywhichway.

The bloke said a new crank would be £200.00 so by implication he reckoned it was knackerd.

Are the needle bearings in a cage or do they possibly run on the crankshaft direct?

I know nothing about 2 stroke engines btw.

If the rest of the saw is serviceable and your not a big every day to day user of the saw (i feel a few knives coming my way now) then throw an aftermarket crank at it. Get some new Caber rings too if you think the piston and cylinder will go again. Worth a go from the sounds of your description.

You should be able to get an OEM crank easy enough, I have a few scrappers I need to get rid of in the workshop! The cylinder doesn't sound so good, they came in a number of diameters so need to ensure you get the right one for the saw. Not sure what I have in my collection.

I can't see it being worth it myself. I might cannibalise o broken saw for its crank and put it in another for the hell of it but throw £200 at it...

Aftermarket cranks are no more than £50, caber rings are less than £15 to your door. IF the cylinder and piston would go again as possibly stated then its worth a go imo, again if not an every day user. But if not all is as suggested then yeah to throw more money at it like you say is defo not worth it. Only the man himself can decide 🤷‍♂️

Rodney did say the compression was poor or "goosed", so the cylinder probably needs replaced, it would only really be for sentimental reasons and/or curiosity that I would possibly try and get her going again. 

I will mull it over,
