Need help with mandarin citrus tree

I am very knew to this, I planted a mandarin tree back in February , I live in Phoenix Arizona where heat is really high.

 

I had been watering the tree , but I guess was not enough, because some leafs fell off . Then I started watering more , on a daily basis. One day I was put of town for two days and it was very hot I couldn’t water them so leafs fell off because dried, I keep watering everyday but I don’t know if the tree is alive or not , please see attached picture . could anybody please give me some advise ? Thank you

I assumed it was in the ground when he said " planted " . Looks like a border at the base of the wall . I could well be wrong .
