Many (most) grades of stainless are non magnetic eg 316 which is sometimes used for liner.

Edit should have googled first, seems like 904 and 316 are common grades of stainless for liners and both non magnetic.

Yes and 904 is mostly for solid fuel.

It confused me with that grey surface. What is the diameter?

It's a 7inch diameter so I'm hoping they it'll be straight forward enough to attach a 6 inch stove pipe to it using a 6 to 7 inch increaser..

It sounds like I may have trouble finding a hetas engineer to do the work and 'sign it off' given that they haven't also installed the flue.. it seems crazy to go to the effort and expense of dropping a 6 inch flexi down the existing flue though when a £50 converter can join the two different diameters of pipe!! The other route involves a £250 application for building regs and a whole lot of effort which is really rather avoid if possible too.!!

I know a load of people who never got building control consent. Is this a viable option so you think?

I don't know. But a Hetas engineer can inspect and certify an existing liner. I'd get it checked, get a certificate and crack on.
