So has this started since the new spark plug etc was installed or before? If its been a problem since then its obviously something he did. If it's like it before it can only really be a breather or a piston issue. I know he said it's in great condition but did he take the pot off or look through the exhaust. The pistons usually go between the exhaust port and the chain as that's the hottest and least lubricated part of the piston

Only started doing it, put it in for a service as it felt like it was lagging a bit but still had no real problems running the saw, it does seem to be heating up quite quick now though so he’s possibly done something but not too keen to take it back to him

It sounds like he's used a dud plug or something. Swap the plug out and see what happens. You may just be unlucky. He won't have burried it in some wood to test it after the service. Simple things first!

Looks like an air leak would have caused that paddy. Changed a piston and cylinder today on a 660 and my first one and fired up on third pull so well chuffed. Nice to finally do one and see the full workings of it all

Lots of things can cause it! That section of the piston is the furthest from the inlet (cooling and lubrication) the furthest from the cool air from the flywheel, the closest to the exhaust and chain to so is usually quite covered over. It seems to be one of the first areas to go and can't be seen through the exhaust which is why I said. If matey just looked through the exhaust or down the plug he won't have seen it really. At the same time this just seems like a dodgy plug if it's after he serviced it because there isn't much to mess up on a service like this! 

 

Good job on the 660. What happened to it?
