I'm thinking about cutting down a pine that's trunk is about 17" in the garden ... roughly what will I have to pay if I want to get the stump removed so the ground's at least level or ideally be able to grass over it?

There's easy access by sliding out a fence panel.

However much your local hiring company wants for their grinder if it's for yourself? Those grinders are piss easy to use and 17" is pretty tiny. I paid £44 for the day last time I rented one

That's cheap, I'd only get half a day for that but the machine is nearly new and teeth always sharp.

Most people are going to say £100+ just because by the time you've factored in travel, unloading, loading etc the fact that it only takes 20-30 mins to grind fades away.

Hadn't thought about hiring one but will definitely get a quote and see how it compares to getting someone else doing it so great suggestion thank you!

For a stump that size, depending on distance to travel, access, proximity to walls/fences/patio etc, arisings staying on site or removed, Would be somewhere between 120-160. Will always be cheaper to hire and do yourself but how much do you value your own time?

and it’s good to watch and learn from someone experienced if you’ve never done this before.

just my 2p worth

Certainly worth comparing and I don't have a trailer .... not convinved one will go in the back of a Zafira but not sure how big a smaller one would be.

Cheers for the ballpark as well at least it gives me a guide to compare against.

When you say lift panel out will there be gravel board to get over.

Not on ours .... although that may have been a nieve mistake when ours was put up.
