Timber weight and m3

Recommended Posts

I can see why the truckers need to charge by the ton for carriage but the wood should be sold by volume at all points in the chain.

how would that work.........imagine an FC site with 20000 tons at roadside...r u goin to measure all the logs seperately to get their volume and u cant trust harvesters computer measurement systems ...to easy to fiddle if u wanted to.

Once its on the lorry it would be simple to do a box calc around the trucks load bed & then an allowance for space. Or as the tech already exists for the log to be scanned (as it is at the mill) it could be added to the harvester.

truckers will charge by the ton for legal reasons on the rd i reckon

Thats why I said I understood that truckers needed to. But again they should really charge a fee for the distance & then x per tonne of weight carried.

As long as they are under their legal weight they can charge how they like.

just would never happen, in the real world, too much trust involved

You mean the same trust thats needed for the lorry load weights?

Ok big places might use a weigh bridge but I would guess that most use either weight scale on the grab arm or an axle load weight.

Not seen any do a print out yet just a hand written ticket (not that I have dealt with many).

Measuring the length of the load & the height its filled to (the width would be fixed) will soon give a measurement.

but can u really see that being practical or very accurate, ....maybe ur post leads from buying green wood in and not getting enough volume for tonage.

as for hand written tickets ask for ur timber to be run over a computerised system. its in the lorry driver interest to be as near maxinum weight as possible

As a rough and ready rule I have room on my trailer for 20 cu metres of timber. Roughly 50% air space so 10 cu metres of solid tmber = 10 tonnes when green. If its part seasoned and weighs 8 tonne all the better I dont want to buy water or pay fuel to take it home.

these are the figures weve used when processing hardwoods for firewood, especially beech into log form - people think you can get more than 1 - 1.5 cubic metre per tonne but you dont when youve logged it all up. - i think some of the people whove bought in timber at 26 tonne lorry loads will soon realise its harder to achieve those margins as they think theyll get more cube out of it.

Thankyou someone talking sense!
