I'm in the market for a new compact saw ~40cc, I've been offered a new in box Shindaiwa 389S I know it's a superseded model but the price is good.

On paper the 389S looks to be of similar performance and arguably better build quality than the Husqvarna 435 and Stihl 211that I have been considering.

There doesn't appear to be much information on the 389S online, has anyone had first hand experience with this model ? Opinion of the saw ?

You don't have a location in your profile, where on earth are you ? I can't help you with the saw as it seems you will have the only one left in the country if you are in UK so probably that is an omen.

check out echo 390sx it’s pretty much the same saw.

Correct me if I am wrong. Shindaiwa are owned by echo and a lot of the newer pro saws from echo such as 620,501,2511,360 and 390 started life at shindaiwa in a similar form.
echo are meant to be the premium brand So they ve moved things over from there.

Echo CS-390ESX (Shindaiwa 390sx or 2038s in Japan) is the successor of 389s which was introduced in the beginning of 00's.

If you're looking for the chainsaw of that size, 390ESX is the way to go.

CS-501 started it's life as Shindaiwa 446/452s.

CS-620SX is originally Kioritz (ECHO) design from late 00's.

360/361/362TES/WES is also originally Kioritz.

2511TES/WES is purely Yamabiko (joint engineering)
