Hole in back of woodburner

Hi I hope some one can help, i found a 50mm dim hole in the back of our woodburner, see photo its the small hole on left, is it safe to use like this, any advice please  thanks ken

Is it for an auxillary vent newer bigger stoves have these for better combustion  building regs etc

Its for smoke free zones . Cleaner burn and no slumbering .

I’m struggling to work out where the hole is. 

Is it above where the baffle usually sits and you moved the baffle before you spotted it?

if that is the case it looks to me that it is a hole cut for backboiler outlet. I have had stoves where the hole is precut  but not quite finished, so that if you were to fit a backboiler you could just pop the blank out.

looks like yours has fallen out. 

 

If if I am right I wouldn’t use it. 

Block the hole off again with a big thick washer each side and a bolt through them.

I would agree. My stove has a blanking plate like that for a back boiler, but his has fallen out

Hi All thanks for your post, yes i knocked the baffle down i discovered the hole, i cannot see any thing that has fallen out so how long the hole has been Open like that is unknown, just wondering how safe it is to use with an open hole above the baffle plate? Thanks Ken

I would advise fixing with bolt and thick washers before using.

If it is your only form of heating the risk might be better than freezing to death. 

Don't use it if you have a damper/flap on your flue.

OK so it's new year and you're probably not going to get an answer til next week but it might be worth getting in touch with the manufacturer and asking them. Might be that there are the manual online or somewhere to that might give you a clue. Its a very even hole - meant to be there at some point and for some reason just got to work out why. I would consider the washer and bolt and see what happens (would the baflfle plate go back again if there is a bolt in it?)

hole used to be able to feed outside air to firebox. creates air pressure into house rather than sucking cold air from doors / windows into firebox. Deets here:
