BG86 blower eating starter springs!

I was given a (Ergostart?) 2014 Stihl BG86C blower to look at as the starter cord was jammed.

Popped the R clip, washer and pawls out to find the starter spring was mangled so ordered a new one and fitted it with no problems. The recoil spring was fine and pulls the cord back into the housing straight away.

The machine pulled and started fine half a dozen times, then came back to me with the same problem. Lo and behold the brand new genuine Stihl spring has suffered the same fate again and is bent out of shape.

Any ideas where I may have gone wrong?

I have one of these and it did the same after I'd had it a while, the secret is that you don,t try to start it in the conventional manner ie by strongly pulling the cord..... you just apply even gentle pressure until the machine springs its self into action... so you don't follow right with your arm.

I get the feeling that on a cold day the idea's at it's limit and you have to be careful, cheers.

They are a bit prone to this. I went through about 4 springs before I bought a new cover (as in the whole orange cover thing )

never had a problem since.

mine lasted 3 years of daily use before going.

its something to do with the “axle” The whole spring arrangement sits on getting out of line or loose. No fixing it if it that

I don't bother replacing those springs anymore, just use a pulley from the non easy start version. It replaces both pulleys and gets rid of the spring.

Another way to fix it is to get a Husqvarna 525BX blower . More powerful and lighter than the Stihl ?

They really shouldn't fit such a crap starter system on these machines, it's so badly made.

Apart from the fact it's badly made, loads of these fail due to a flooding carb.  Usually after the machine has been standing for a few hours, and then giving it a tug, not realising the engine has a partial hydraulic lockup.  If it spits fuel out of the exhaust after not being used for while you need to sort the carb out before going any further, because this will destroy those starters.

You're bang on the money, the reason the first spring broke is due to a flooding carb! I fitted a brand new carb at the same time which cured the running/starting issues.

Does anyone have a part no. For the non Ergostart pulley that will fit in the original casing? I can find plenty of solid one piece pulleys on eBay but all for different machines, how do I tell which one is a straight swap?

Thought it might be the reason, usually is. ;)  What was the reason for fitting a new carb though?

Trouble is, once that cushion spring has forced itself between the pulley parts, the groove for the brake spring enlarges, then you have a even bigger gap between those parts which causes it to fail even easier.  You can try shimming it out with an extra washer, or bung a whole new starter assy on it.
