Using non genuine parts

Need to get a few parts for a 200t. Looking for a new side cover and chain break, also looking for a carb. Leaning towards getting a genuine carb but genuine chain breaks are (as far as I can see on eBay) nearly double the price. Am I being tight or are the non genuine just as good?

If it was me buying parts for my Stihl I’d buy genuine parts, I’m as tight has they come but that’s a question I’d like to see answered as I’m buying parts for my 044. I could ask the same question about which guide bar and chain to buy, Rotatec or Stihl?.

Some of the after market gear is of acceptable quality and some is tosh, picking through it can be challenging. For engine parts I would go OEM and plastics aftermarket, cant think of any plastic bits I have bought that have been a problem. They just look shit

Pretty hit and miss on AM parts. I have lobbed some straight in the bin before now. The side cover for a MS200T is noticeably different in its operation, harder to click on and less well built but does work.

The carbs tend to be a bit iffy and have swapped them out in the past although one or two have been OK, they tend to have unstable idles and don't hold tune well.

Some parts are good and some depends on the manufacturer.

If you are using the saw professionally then the savings of using non OEM parts isnt worth thinking about.

It is a shot in the dark at best as the quality of copied parts is sketchy to say the least.

I have seen more than enough machines with fake coils, carbs and plastics to realise it is a total waste of time and eventually money to try and save a few quid. You might get lucky but if you dont is it really worth it for the hassle?
