Wood carving chisel sharpening

I just use various flat wet stones for flat chisels, axes, machetes etc
a small square stone for gouges and a round stone for bill hooks, sickles etc
All freehand, no stropping.
To really get a fine edge, I pin 300-1000 grit, wet and dry to a flat board.

So you see no need for anything finer than 1000 grit RH?

Normally I use 100-300.
I named my business after my wood working style.[emoji12][emoji106]
But if you do want to sharpen/polish things to a fine degree, look into pastes ,clays and waxes.

I did not wish to draw any unfortunate inferences, however indubitable, from your user ID9_9

And anyway I just ordered this;

Trend DWS/HP/KIT Honing paste kit

kit from FFX

The kit arrived this morning.

I first tried the plane iron on my forearm hairs, after a touch-up on the 1000 grit diamond stone.

No dice.

I then followed the instructions for using the honing paste, and after a very few strokes,

WOW

A wee snowdrift of downy hair piling up on top of the plane iron.

Seriously impressed.

£15.00 well spent, even though, as I thought,  I did not need the bit of leather.

cheers

You will need a very different system for turning chisels to carving chisels and plane irons - turning chisels I use a creusen slow speed grinder with white wheels and a simple sorby jig. 15 seconds and i am back on the lathe - a tormek or similar is way too slow to be of any use on turning tools - not a one size fits all when it comes to sharpening tools.
