Has anyone ever seen an English Oak hedge? I can’t see why Oak shouldn’t make a decent hedge, similar to beech, but as I’ve never seen one, I guess it doesn’t work.

Plant it now and it'll be home for nesting birds around the turn of the century!

I've often dreamed of such a thing myself; if I'd had the ground for it when I was 20 I'd have done it.

Yes an Oak hedge works fine.

the dead autumn leafs stay on the branches all winter forming a nice screen, just as they do with a beech hedge.

Give it an ‘A’ shaped profile and it will look stunning! (No gappy bottom)

I’m guessing that Beech just makes more sense over an Oak hedge. Beech trees will always hold on their dead leaves in the lower parts of the canopy which is why they don’t fall off on hedgerows also.

I guess I’ll just have to give it a go then. Thanks.

But as Mark says, Oak also holds on to dead leaves. I’m surprised not to have ever seen one: Oak’s got to make for an interesting, wildlife friendly hedge
