So I got a call from the contractors wife,

She's saying they might have to tax me at source???

Because I'm felling on a construction site.

I'm self employed, have been since 2013.

Worked for loads of different companies.

Never heard this before.

Anyone?

Standard these days mate, CIS.

They’ll nab 20% of what you invoice, which you then offset against your tax return.

Registration is pretty straightforward, but you need the right one.

There’s a thread on here somewhere which someone more intelligent than me will be able to link.

What Mark said.

I don't know about individuals but companies get a 'balance sheet' a few times a year detailing how much has been held back on all of the jobs you've done.

its a method to insure the tax man gets his cut at source

It's not new.

If it hasn't been deducted by the main contractor it should have been. I think the tax man can go after them because they're meant to pay over CIS payments.

It doesn't matter if you are a brain surgeon on construction sites CIS trumps you.
