Hi all can any one shed any light on weather beech ash & sycamore will still take spalting on if stored in 8/10 ft lengths inside a agri building, or does it need to be out side in the weather, i dont want a bit of light spalting ,i want some deep heavy lined spalting, its something i dont know much about but have had it in some beech and ash of late that was fantastic looking wood but it was only smallish diameter firewood and looking at stacking some beech ash and sycamore from a job after christmas, many thanks

ot needs to be somewhat open to a few elements or the spores won't take hold as it could be too dry.

i'd leave the stack outside but put a bit of ply on top to cover it or have a tarp that almost covers it. you don't want it sopping wet but you don't want it too dry either.

it's a bit of a black art and you are not guaranteed to get the results you desire as it can depend as to the time of year as to what species of fungal spore is floating around.

this video can explain quite a bit about how tricky it can be.

What a great video, Steve!
I had some large sycamore slabs that had got a bit of woodworm and a guy who buys a fair bit of ash off me said I had t get em out the stack/sets n burn em before they ruined everything else. But being a bit of a tight arse I just moved em well away from the rest un-stickered, with the intention of cutting the worst bits out..... then forgot about them![emoji849]
About 18months later ‘re-discovered’ them on a fudge about day & made a bar for marquee on 50th birthday:

Looked fantastic when varnished
