School Children getting paid for work experience

i worked for a chicken and dairy farm across the road when i was 13 during  the school holidays. Miserable bastard said i was going to get  paid and after slogging my guts out he gave me a fiver.

It's work experience Steve. If nothing else, the kids learn that no matter how much energy and effort they put in, the employer won't reward or appreciate it.

I know another lady that runs a small business that takes on these youngsters for work experiance, she doesn't give them anything either. To get to her place they would have to pay for transport unless they were very local. Throwing them a few quid to cover travel costs and a bit of lunch wouldn't be too far out IMO.

I appreciate its work experience.  And if they are lingering around and just simply learning things and gaining a bit of experience then thats all fair.  If however they are actively contributing to productivity and earning the boss extra income then they should absolutely be paid something, even if only a token gesture.

yes but i had visions of 20 quid at least. Still by the next holiday i made sure to ask for work on a set rate.

Yeah, in a lot of cases!  For the ones who walked away with a job at the end of it then it was worth while, but naturally there will always be people looking to exploit the system for their own gain.

My son works in the local pub kitchen at weekends, however he had choices of work experience places . So he decided  the pub was the best option as he was already in paid employment there,  @£6 somthing p/h for two wks he was happy.

he did tell me that if he went anywhere else it would have been free labour.
