Smell of smoke in house

Is it a metal lining in the chimney , or one that was created using an inflatable "sausage" and infilled around with pumice type stuff ? If it was the latter and you live in an old stone house the recent spate of hot weather could have caused movement in the stone walls and created a fissure through which smoke is escaping....

As said before , get some smoke pellets and see where it goes .

The original chimney is clay pipe built in to the wall then it's had a metal flue put down it when we had the wood burner installed.

I have had the stove give off a puff of smoke when it's been to shut down then comes back to life with a whoosh pushing smoke into the room.

I've had that happen before when opening the burner door it's released a puff of smoke in to the room but this was a prolonged smell as though it was constantly releasing smoke although no visibly.

1.  Was it first light this year?  couldn't just be the smell of dust burning off the stove?

2. install sounds ok to me but do a draw smoke to test draw and to test seals.

  a.  seal test, smoke pellet in the stove, all vents shut, check for leaks.

  b.  check draw,  warm flue with blow lamp inside stove for a couple of minutes, smoke pellet in vents shut, open vents when stove full of smoke, smoke should clear quickly.  then open a window in the same room, watch to see smoke continues to go up flue but no faster - if it does go faster it indicates the air intake isn't sufficient - check its not blocked.   not sure but your room sealing kit probably means this test is pointless/needs doing differently.

3.  do smoke test to check flue integrity.  this requires going on the roof, covering the chimney cap so you can fill the flue with smoke.  it will then try and find other routes out and you may find wisps emerging through cracks/faults.

after that,

get a good sweep into use their experience and find the problem.

No it's been lit probably 10 times since it was swept.

It sounds like I need to get my chimney sweep to investigate.

have you checked in the loft to see if its coming out of the stack there or back through the roof ?

I poked my head up there and couldn't see anything.

camera survey of flue to check in detail never a bad thing

I think my chimney sweep can do a camera survey if required so will see what he says.

I did light the burner again last night with the upstairs bedroom window closed the whole time and no smell of smoke at all! So I'm thinking it must be something to do with negative draft but that would still mean something is wrong as the smoke smell shouldn't be getting in to the house

We get a negative draft sometimes, usually weather dependent, but opening or shutting various windows and doors usually sorts it. Doesn't happen very often maybe twice a year and the stove is lit all winter. I'd say it's not too unusual.

Obvs you want to know if your liner is ok anyways and as said check batteries in smoke alarms.
