Getting the best out of a Granberg Precision Grinder

Just speculating here but for it to be exactly right for both sides of the chain would require the pivot of mechanism for the tooth angel to be spot on in the middle of the bar. As the grinder gets used on different width bars it wont be perfect on all bar thicknesses. As I say this is just speculation from seeing how grinders work

Yeah, that occurred to me too (standing in the shed, puzzling as to how I’d just wiped four quid off a chain).

Some kind of clamshell?

I purchased one of them, specifically to sharpen 36" + bars.  I persevered with it for a few years, it just jammed all the time and took a long time to set up.   One day I had a revolutionary moment, I picked up £130 worth of grinder and threw the whole lot in the hedge (been stump ground since) picked up a file and sharpened the saw with a file - I really have not looked back since, my chain sharpening has been so much faster, much more pleasurable (compared to that thing) and with a sharper result every time.

If this is the case can you stick a thin packer on the reference side to centre it? Might be off the other way of course.

I can't see what all the fuss is about...ok so the grinder is a little bit agricultural compared to a Dremmel  for instance and the jig is a bit like comparing a BSA as compared to a Honda ....a wee bit unrefined, if you get my drift.

As the components are cast alloy they are most likely all the same so although slightly sloppy I don't think yours will be different to any other.

Having said this, with the diamond burr to me it's the most accurate and quickest method I've found...... just done my 36" chain in 10 minutes...very exact and a supersharp razor finish,    cheers

I'm sort of glad to hear that some others are having the same issue. I need to make an adjustment on the backstop when I swing the grinder round to do the other side. If I don't the tooth length would be about 2-3mm longer or shorter.

Other than that it's a great bit of kit.

Basically my position. I'll update this thread if I have any revelations.
