Greenmech vs Forst?

Hmmm, not so sure, I’ve had both, GMs service is superb, I’ve been under a chipper in my barn for 20 minutes straight with one of their engineers on the phone talking me through a problem on a machine I bought second hand in another country, net gain to them, zero.

Redwood have been equally helpful with the ST8 tbh.

The quadchip is built to be under 750kg so will be less robustly constructed, that’s just physics I guess.

Yup both GM and Forst service guys have been pretty great on the phone in the past.  And you're right, you do get 250kg less chipper with the Quadchip - which I guess is both good and bad.

I would love a chipper that doesn't have a reputation for breaking frequently and also that I can maintain/repair independently when it does..

Don’t we all!

I think the key to keeping a chipper running is regular maintenance, by which I mean checking belts, fluid levels, anvils, blades etc. Plus when it starts making a different noise or acting strangely, don’t just plough on and wait for it to blow, find out what’s wrong, and fix it, pronto.

Sounds obvious I know.

You don't work for GM do you? ?

No mate, I work for me but have run a lot of chippers from various manufacturers over the years. Greenmech machines seem to work very well in our application and I subsequently rate them (and the company behind them) very highly indeed.

I bought a tidy second hand Quadchip at the end of last year as it was a bit of a bargain - (we generally run 1928 sized machines as we aren’t limited by towing restrictions and they are great for getting rid of brash quickly) and had no previous experience of the QC - I have to say that I’m really impressed with it! I was going to sell it on but it will probably stay here now as  the turntable is really really useful on certain jobs.

In your shoes I’d buy the cheap QC - it is a no brainer from where I’m sat (but some people do seem to struggle to see past the colour orange)...

Quad Chip does sound cheap, the QC isn't a direct competitor to the ST6 however..

Is the QC just finished its days work, a couple photos to advertise and you inherit any problems it may or may not have? There is a lot to be said for buying from a reputable dealer with a full service carried out, bearings gone through, sharpened blades etc then backed by a warranty putting piece of mind against your hard earned.

We just sold a PX 2011 QC160 with 1550 hours, serviced, a used warranty etc for £8,500 inc vat.

If the QC 160 (actually called QC 150) you are referring to is one of the very early first QC's fitted with a Daihatsu diesel engines that were recently for sale rather than the Kubota engined production machines it will be worth less... The customer who bought the QC I mentioned above looked at these prior to coming to us.
