Power requirement goes up with the cube of the air thrashed about (roughly proportional to length of strimmer line) a large steel blade would sap less power and not send bits of plastic everywhere.

Would take longer to spin up is the only thing, and time is of the essence here!

Basically your not gonna beat simon unless you have a tractor... not even a bcs meter finger bar can!

Got to give it a go, plus I quite like the idea of making a "hot strimmer" as I doubt its been done very many times, if at all!

You would need to tune the length of string  to the power band of the engine, make it a bit longer and it won't rev high enough. You can severely overheat a strimmer motor by dropping the revs with too high a load.

Maybe something like guitar string, which has the little washer thing fixed on the end to hold it in place?

Back in 74 we tried steel line in place of a brush cutter blade ( before plastic line was available) and it fatigues and snaps in short order.

How long did it last? As bear in mind this only has to last for 5 mins, it's a sprint not a marathon.

I cannot remember but it was seconds rather than minutes

Why try and beat this fella with a spud ported souped up machine, for kudos? If you did the machine yourself instead of paying someone to do it maybe. Why bother, sometimes man is better than machine. Live with it.
