Wet weather wear.

I am at the end of my tether with wet weather gear. I have tried so many different things, and really thought i had it sorted with the stein jacket i got a couple of months back. However yesterday that also got relegated to the 'crap clothing' department. It seems to have lost its waterproofness already- after about 10 minutes i was absoloutely soaking and freezing cold:thumbdown:, water coming in all over, especially through those zips under the arms (why do manufacturers insist on the ridiculous things:thumbdown:).

 

What does everyone else use, or recommend? Someone said the SIP (goretex?) ones were pretty good?

Mate I know where your coming from! Even Goretex isn’t the final amswer. I have a jacket which I use for walking etc, cost me £170 and after a few washes has lost its waterproofness (is there such a word?)

 

Apparently it needs re-washing in a special detergent as the goretex gets contaminated with dirt and looses its effectiveness.

 

I do a lot of cycling and there are some excellent, fully breathable and waterproof jackets out there. All it needs is the manufacturer to re-brand a few jackets and expand their market.

Goretex is fickle stuff. It is a semi permeable membrane that works on temperature difference from inside to outside, and as you say must be washed with care. I dont understand the full complexities of it as it was only explained to me late last night (when i was exhausted , soaking still, and freezing cold) but something to do with pores getting blocked and tumble dryinghelping too, which can 'regenerate' the goretex.

You read my mind! Have had three showers now today from getting flippin' soaked. I blame the climate more than the gear tho. I am of the opinion that rain is BAD because seemingly so was God! Here's the evidence!!!

Not exactly flexible and breathable tho is it! I seriously contemplated going and donning my oceanic drysuit this afternoon knowing I had another hour or two in the monsoon...

I guess not, but the criteria was to be dry.

 

I have had a couple of them and they really do keep you dry in the most savage of weather.

Mac in a sac, non breathable but dry!!!!!

 

I use those ex army goretex which i bought for £10, okay its camo but its dry!!!!
