I saw lots of these when I travelled to bruge in Feb of 2016. Along side the railway. The Dutch have quite a few as well. I think they look very nice and would be interested in how they survive over time.

When i lived in Holland saw lots and even worked on some...With leaf they look so formal.Like fists of green...not everyone's cuppa. A great way to manage Urban Forest

They look like Alms houses, there’s a couple in Halifax built just like that. I think they were built for war veterans in the late 1800s/ early 1900s  Or for the well heeled who had fallen on hard times, charitable anyway.

 

i noticed some young limes in a supermarket car park last week, two rows that were being preached/pollarded. The laterals were more horizontal and it looked like the intention is twist the shoots together to encourage inosculation. 

Be interesting to see how they develop, I’m not sure the owners have considered how much effort managing them will actually entail to create the effect the landscape architect was after.
