Four days of research, a small USB full of PDFs and much head scratching and here it is, my first attempt at a class I double braid splice on 9mm Marlow friction rope! + home made fids.

Its a good feeling when that core disappears, one that can be summed up in a single word....

'Aaaaaayyyyyy' :thumbup1:

Yes the taper could be a bit smoother. Did you taper the core?

Also, ditch the tubular fid, and make or buy a wire fid with piano wire, much thinner and very strong. (Good work on the homemade gear though, must have taken ages to polish that tubular fid up so it didnt catch strands.)

Cheers Drew, agreed its not quite right is it! I did indeed taper the core, however the last strand I plucked out was connected to the first one I cut so it looked dodgy before it even went in. Perhaps this is what caused it?

I ended up casting the T fid away as I found the wire one much easier to use!

It didnt take long to knock it together, a few years of engineering experience means I know a few tricks to make things move quicker! My hands were grey as steel once I was done though!

Going to snip it off and test it to destruction at work next week. Will publish results.

Right! What can I splice next!!
