I don’t know what’s caused this in the first place but it now looks like there’s some mildewy looking fungus under the bark. Is it treatable, or would the trees best chance be to cut off below this patch of flakey bark.

This shows where the affected pet of the tree is b8152a0a098d99cb7f283e41402f9450.jpg

Apple canker, cut off affected part and burn. The mildewy part will prob be woolly aphid, diff to control as reduced chemical arsenal now. Could try water with washing up liquid or soft soap, to break up the waxy coating which gives it its grey colour and protects them

Thank you. I’ll cut it off tomorrow and give the tree a thorough check for anything else. Maybe give it a soap wash as well for any crawlies that are around

I had an old apple orchard years ago - cankered to hell. Heavily pruned it / pollarded two , and used Bordeaux mixture on the bark and cuts , this is a copper sulphate mix with water n slaked lime , so it kills bacterial and fungal infections on the surface ( not inside woody tissues ! ) it was suprisingly effective and the trees all gave good sound regrowth over several years - obvs now I would fell them and plant new , but I was young and ignorant in those days ;) K

Is it coincidence that this is right at the same height as the top of the fence?

Could it have rubbed in high winds? It's hard to see how much space there is between the tree and the fence.
