Can you use a figure of eight termination knot with a Petzl Zig Zag or does it (or any knot) run the risk of impinging on the mechanics of the Zig Zag ?

You can..or a bowline but it getsin the way a little..

Double figure of 8 with a big bite so the knot doesnt interfere with the zigzag.

I ran that setup for ages when i had to cut of the spliced eye off my tachyon due to a silky incident...(thats a silky saw not silky fox who is by all accounts a thoroughly smashin big fella):D

Is there any reason why you aren't using a spliced eye Treerover. The Zigzag is such a joy to climb witb when everything is neat and compact.

I think the spliced end must have become ‘compromised’ at some point and had to be removed .

I think I’m just going to treat myself to new rope as well !!! [emoji857]
I’m liking the sound of ‘compact’ [emoji846]

Also, how does the Zig Zag cope with lateral stress around branches ?

(I have mocked this up to show what I mean....and yes I realise it’s not an ideal route to anchor point but occasionally happens [emoji44])

Exactly what Steve said.I avoid any contact with my Zig Zag and the tree. When climbing up to anchor once the ZZ is anywhere near making contact then the lanyard takes over, and the next throw is made higher up....When blocking down the stem use a false anchor for the Zz to run through.
