Firewood buyer needs advice....

Hi all

I realise this forum isn't really intended for "end users" but I have been reading this forum with great interest and I have learnt a lot!

I am just about to have a small log burner installed at home and need to buy in a supply of wood. Long term I will possibly look at buying locally and seasoning myself but for my initial batch I think I am best buying in the best wood I possibly can. I'll have a small ish log store. So, I was looking at one of the small/medium sized (imported?) kiln dried crates of oak or ash. Ideally I want somewhere between 1 and 1.5 cubes.

There seems to be hundreds of different online sellers, but not that local so I am looking at any company that will do UK delivery.

Any recommendations? Am happy to pay a bit more for better quality, but want the best overall deal.

With my uneducated research, the following options are on my list at the moment...

https://www.logsforsale.co.uk/product/1m3-crate/

http://www.whitehorseenergy.co.uk/firewood/kiln-dried-ash-firewood/kiln-dried-ash-firewood-large-crate

https://www.uklogsdirect.co.uk/kiln-dried-logs-c1/kiln-dried-ash-logs-c2/kiln-dried-ash-logs-half-crate-dry-low-moisture-logs-p19

And another option I looked at was http://logs2yourdoor.co.uk/logs/kiln-dried/bulk-bag-kiln-dried-logs which is not a crate and a mix of hardwoods.

I’d be buying from certainly wood if I were you. Atleast it’s British timber.

Most crated suppliers are imported wood bar the odd one that are mad enough to stack their own crates.

I’m sure there’ll be a supplier on here that is more local to you and could do you a much better price than these importers.

Why do you want kiln dried wood?

It will either be imported, or a by product of some money grabbing RHI scheme :S

Bad for the environment and bad for the economy.

All you need to do ask round locally for recommendations for a seasoned firewood supplier

Logs to your door look perfectly decent for what you want. As long as it’s below 25% you’ll be fine.

The only thing is, that's a mixed bag and 1.5 cube loose.

With the crates I could have oak or ash for similar money (£150) and I think they are nearly 1.5 cube when loose?

So exactly the same then right? [emoji6] except you’re getting British wood and supporting more than just one business, there’s the whole supply chain to think about.

Mixed hardwood is good, each species has its place when it comes to stoves. I like birch and sycamore to start with and ash/beech later on. I could do without oak entirely personally.
