I have been asked to do some work on an environmentally sensitive site. We will be cutting Rhododendron as an invasive species.

We have been asked to apply glyphoshate to the stumps. Are there any environmentally sensitive herbicides - digging out the roots is not an option.

Thanks in advance

Eco plugs

IMO they fail on the environmentally sensitive bit as the plastic used is not compostable.

A drilled hole with clay plug would be better or the now unlicensed ammonium sulphamate

Why is sodium chlorate no longer used?  Because it leaches?

I guess because it's an oxidant so of use to terrorists, toxic to humans  and as it's a bulk chemical not worth while any manufacturer getting it licensed because of low profit

It was supposedly very easy to make explosives from Sodium Chlorate, and I read that that was the main reason for taking it out of public availability.

No point in using ecoplugs as an alternative to glyphosate, since their active ingredient IS glyphosate.

Since asking about the withdrawal of sodium chlorate I've looked at Wiki; it seems it's still widely used in bleaching processes in paper manufacture.

Been cutting lots of rhody on sensitive sites. Stump treatment uses minimum amount of glyphosate.  I've just accepted that it's for the greater good.  Timing is crucial, has to be on very fresh cuts, <5 mins really, cambium needs treatment, not the whole cut face, so it's really small amounts.  Follow up in early summer with foliar application.

We use little handheld sprayers.  Each cutter has one.

20% glyphosate, plus blue dye.
