Pole Pruner's?

Any of you guy's out there use pole pruners much?

Looks to me like if you can reach 20ft in the air to do some pruning saves time and is safer than climbing?

(but then what do I know i'm just a ceiling fixer who secretly wants to be a tree surgeon???!!)

dont own one myself but have used them many times in the past. they do have their place, but also in the wrong hands are responsible for a lot of bad treework!

They do come in handy for shaping smaller trees to get the whispy bits and for knocking low down deadwood.

they are good for hedge trimming

i have one that we use quite a bit when hedge laying taller relict hedges, where the thorns have all intertwined,

 

its also useful for going round field boundaries and removing lower branches that are likely to cause damage to machinery, definatly dont try and over reach else the branches have a habit of chasing back down the pole towards the operator!

i use one quite alot i think there brilliant for dead wooding and pruning the tips. but awkard to climb with and heavy at full extention but alot easier than climbig out to the tips.

 

heard of someone who was climbing with a pole saw. hooked it on a branch above him save carrying it around. was climbing aroud beneath it when it fell off the branch so he thought he'd catch it. instead slipped through his hand cutting half way through it to the middle of his palm. lovely!

.......I have often wondered whether using a pole prunner would be good practice or not, in a MEWP.

Use it a lot! ideal for lifting and getting out of tricky hung-up or wind blown stuff.
