From talking to friends who care, It's quite apparant that due to changes in legislation there has been a significant increase in the number of trees being felled across Poland, both in urban areas and nature conservation sites like Bialowieza.

There is a concerted effort by activists and citizens to lobby against the removal of so many trees but these passionate groups need help both nationally and internationally in raising awareness.

If you have the time and you're interested please take a look at the crowd funding website below for more information on the campaign

Poland has historically some fine woodland with economically valued timber, however it is also an exceptional habitat area, I hope the EU can start on this one - to get felling operations and management up to scratch . It has a Bio diversity program running since 2010. K

I wonder how many of these trees are sold in the UK as logs?

The highest % of imported sawn softwood into the UK comes from Sweden, Finland and Estonia and the majority of sawn hardwood comes in from France, Germany and Latvia (FC stats)

To my knowledge, the U.K. Is not one of Polands export destinations for timber.

we do get lots of their apples though.

i can amend your knowledge here then david, maybe none of the bigger companies get them from poland but there are companies who sell oak from poland over here and have been for years.

i was timports first customer for planks (they sell logs too) and all of it comes from his cousins sawmill in the forests of poland. i doubt they are the only one.

Most of the concrete bases we have installed in recent years have been for Polish log cabins. We may not be big importers of their sawn  timer but we do buy a lot of Polish timber products. Cash is king in Poland and god help anyone that will stand in the way of a pole after cash :)

The first photograph in your first post shows a line of field edge trees that have been cut down. IMHO, field edge tree are normally quite rough and generally only suitable for firewood....

Yep, that's an example of felling for highway safety

David, thank you for sharing the campaign here. I can only say that it is bad. It's not only the Bialowieza Forest that is being under threat but as of January 2017 the government removed one important bit of legislation that protected trees along roads and private trees. Since then we saw a proper massacre of trees. Rough estimates say that we've lost over 3 mln trees last year (that does not include forests). So if you feel like supporting Tree Wardens in Poland you can visit the campaing https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/save-poland-s-trees-nature#/ and donate a few pounds. It really matters to us. In return you can get for example our publication Trees - a Lifespan Approach (Nev Fay and Nigel de Berker are the co-authors).
