In my first degree we had a couple of German students come over for a year from our sister university in Leipzeig. We couldn't send any of our students over to Leipzeig because none of my coursemates spoke German.

 

Yet freedom of movement is something Remain voters go on about.

a friend has just achieved a bachelor of engineering with honors here, course was in English and job will be primarily English. Speaking basic Swedish might help him win the job though

Do you honestly think that any of the other European countries will refuse to accept people from here that can make a positive difference to their country?

More UK students are studying abroad then ever......its been a slowly increasing thing. Can't really see the downside myself.

Hope it continues to be an option whatever happens in brexit

I speak fluent Swedish  

 

my partners sister studied sociology, there simply isn't course material available in Swedish so it's English material only

 

a criteria of being in the eu is that English is taught as a second language

 

 

again, I just hope the same opportunities are available to future generations after brexit

Right or wrong, It's already harder for brits to gain the right to reside or residency here.

 

but this kind of immigration is the "good kind" that's never been a problem, and wasn't the focus for many during brexit

How many 18 year old Brits could go down the pub with his new coursemates and have a chat in German or French etc? 

 

Honestly, I can't see how freedom of movement is that great a thing for British people...

That's exactly what I've been saying...

 

I bet 99.9% of Brits have no ability in a foreign language apart from being able to ask for the time in French. Many europeans have a good ability to speak English...

Personally I think Brits are generally ignorant towards wanting to learn other languages where as the rest of the world are not. 

 

Just because a lot of Europeans speak English doesn’t mean they decided to learn it as it’s the worlds leading language! Usually Europeans who speak English also speak 2 or 3 other languages as well as their native language. 

 

We take it for granted that others speak English so we can get by - ignorant.

The ability to speak English gives you opportunities across the world. Not just a small overcrowded island. We who grow up with it as a first language are incredibly fortunate.

 

When i was at school, we were taught French, i couldn't see the point as everyone speaks English! Now i look back and think how incredible arrogant and ignorant i was

IME some EU countries love to meet and speak english, socialising here was far easier than in an unknown city in the uk.

 

In France for example, they were incredibly hostile if you didn't make the effort. (quite right too imo)

Make the tiniest effort though and again, socialising was incredibly easy.
