Engraving chopping boards

I've got to engrave a couple of chopping boards as a present for someone. I'll probably be looking to do  a few more wood working projects soon as well...

Whats the best way to go about this?

I've been looking at 1/4" routers and dremel engravers and wondered which would be best to use? it will be mostly for lettering not pictures or anything like that, I'm not artistic enough!

 

I'm sure i've seen a few people on here doing engraving? Ian Leach i think...?

Never used a router and never had a proper play with dremel, but found a a couple decent chisel to be good. Flexcut make a few different sizes and work well. What size lettering and in what wood? Less easy to get detail doing small lettering on softwood.

That looks pretty good to me! It will be in hardwood oak or beech and the lettering will be quite small i guess.

Flexcut looks like they do lots of chisels what ones did you use for your sign?

I used the mc150 and mc175 for this but for tiny writing id use the sk100 palm tool with a gentle mallet! For lettering you could start off with a v gauge meybs 70 and a flat sweep would get you started in the sk100 range. But for a little bit more you get a whole range.

They have doubled in price since I bought my last set 7 yrs ago!


Is go for a set, you get much more for you money and you'll find a use for the ones you didn't think you'd need

Just noticed this post. I could laser engrave them for you if they aren't bigger than A3 in size (450 x 305mm). The beauty of laser engraving is that there is a colour change in the wood due to it burning the wood and the engraving stands out a lot better than if it had been carved.

Hey buddy, I use a dremel with a variety of different bits.  And a set of very small hand chisels.

Some of my work all hand carved of course.
