It doesn't work when you dangle it.

I have an old 44cc Ryobi that works fine when its horizontal but as soon as you angle it nose down it loses power. Any thoughts as to how to solve? (Buy a decent saw is not an option for the time being and this one has served me well for a while.)

if your lucky the fuel hose inside fuel take has got stuck somewhere high in tank. but guess you have tried fill saw to brim?

Has the filter/weight fallen off the end of the fuel pipe?

Good shouts. I'll have a look at them but it was brimmed so not hopeful. It's also instantaneous so as it tilts the revs drop off straight away. You can almost play tunes with it.

Investigated fuel pick-up issues but all seems fine. Before I play 'find the bit of the carb that pinged across the workshop', any other thoughts?

It takes about 15 minutes to remove and strip a carb, procrastinating about what else you should do will not get it fixed. Find out what kind of carb it has and order a kit for it (usually under £10 sometimes under £5) then if that doesn't work start looking for other options.

There is a tiny reservoir of fuel in the carb so if it really is instantaneous then I'd be looking in the carb for the problem.  I think a pinched fuel line or pick up issue would take a few seconds to show as an issue. 

It could be the metering lever is not operating quite correctly and in need of a tweek - its the only thing i can think of that gravity might affect in an otherwise sound carb. .... but that said the spring should pay the major role in controlling lever position.

My guess says there's two problems.

One is with the AV, allowing too much movement.

This is causing a pipe pinch, or a split pipe to open up.
