Hi guys,

I'm looking for the best legal combination of vehicle and chipper combination that is within the 3,5t weight limit and still be able to transport a fair amount of woodchip/logs after a job.

Any ideas or redirection to another thread?

Technically, if you are keeping out of ops license territory....

Use a flatbed 3.5 GVW (with 3.5 ton towing capacity) with turntable chipper installed on the bed. Then tow a 3.5 ton tipping trailer and set up at all jobs to allow for side feeding chipper. Oh, and practice being really good at reversing the full rig.

That should give close to 2.5 tons payload, just pack all tools and ladders around the chipper on the back of the truck. No idea why we dont all do this???

And make sure all drivers have the appropriate towing rights on their license.

I've thought that before.

I have to say though having really gone down the mog route, the mog is the answer. Front mount chipper, timber trailer behind. Very hard to beat.

For a Mog to be a viable solution you have to be pretty good with a spanner to keep it operating, or have access to a good mobile mechanic. If you have to send it away to AV or ACP on a flat bed to get it repaired, the bills and downtime would prove to be prohibitive.

Don't get caught running it on red while doing domestic Arb either, HMRC seemed well up to speed when they dipped ours. Thankfully we were running on white and they went on their way with no further questions.

Just looking for a realistic vehicle + trailer (chipper) combination for domestic clients within the 3,5t limit. A chipper is about 750kg, so that leaves me with 2750kg for vehicle (incl. equipment, 2 people and load of woodchips/logs).

Althought the options of having the chipper mounted on the back and tow a trailer mentioned earlier sounds like a good option too. Going to have a look into that.
