That's true but that's for your own business isn't it? Your paying the mots etc. Would you do the same for someone else? I wouldn't

I have my own work and I price according to allow.. at the moment I'm working for someone and I drive around and they give me 40p for every mile I do in my own truck. It works out at 15mpg is 40p ish.. so not worth it towing. Going into their office tomorrow I think.

Don't see it makes any difference it either covers the costs or doesn't. The OP owns the truck anyway. If it's easy open road miles towing cant see its too bad.

3.5 tonne on the back slogging over rough ground would be a different matter.

For me it's not about covering costs it's about the value it adds to the business. You can't buy and run a truck for 45p a mile. Why should the op subsidise his "employers" business?

If he asks too much and the employer gets there own truck he makes nothing!

Somewhere there is some middle ground where they both get a good deal

That's the point! At 45p per mile towing heavy trailer he makes nothing!

All he gets in return is a knackered truck!

0.45p is not going to cover costs. It'll cover diesel but that's about it. Tyre wear/ extra servicing costs and wear and tear will all come out of your own pocket.

I pay someone £1 a mile when he uses his own truck to tow a trailer to the job sometimes. So for a job 15 miles away I'd pay £30 extra. I'd feel cheeky paying any less then that to be honest as I know he would ultimately making up the short fall in the long run.

A truck should be the same as any other machine hired out to do a job in my opinion- you cover the costs and make a bit extra on top for profit.

45p a mile should more than cover fuel IMO. I regularly do a 100 mile trip with 1000 kg processor on the back. I use around £20 of fuel so average 26 MPG which is nothing special but leaves 25p per mile to cover other costs. My Old Dmax was better on fuel than the Hilux. Maybe 45p is not enough but can see a profit to made at a lot less than £1 per mile.

Ignoring other factors like if you have the job because you have a vehicle available I think 45p is reasonable.

I was doing costings for our Isuzu delivering firewood and if you assume 25mpg diesel costs 18p a mile with no vat. Depreciation is around 15p a mile - no vat, no major repairs because it's under warranty until 100,000 miles when we'll sell, insurance is 3p a mile and 3p a mile for minor repairs. That makes 39p a mile before labour. Obviously vat adds a lot and it's going to vary massively but it's a reasonable guide.

I guess it depends what you are happy with. I would not use my truck for someone else for 45p a mile (a one off is different) besides if they need another vehicle full time they should just buy one if they think that they can run one on 45p then they should run it themselves.

Not wanting to sound like a lefty but if you work for someone full time they should provide everything all you should do is turn up on time and do a good job
