John Cruickshank, the last surviving WW2 VC winner aged 105. Flew a Catalina flying boat and when attacking a German submarine made two runs on his target, got strafed pretty badly, navigator killed, recieved 72 injuries, sunk the sub, and made sure the aircraft got back to base. Rarely spoke about it. A real hero who really did put his life on the line.

He never flew operationally once he recovered! Apparently,  medics had to give him blood while still sat in the pilots seat too!
