Advice on T540

The youngster that works with us wants to buy a 540 , he wants to buy second hand despite me telling him to go down the new route and offering to let him pay me back .

I know the early ones had quite a few problems , are there any bad years in particular ?

I only have experience of my own one 2014 model which has been fine .

There are no bad ones in particular, just make sure it starts easily, ticks over Nicly and has plenty of power.

Common issues, stuck or worn piston ring, mainly down to people running cheap oil. If it doesn't idle this is why in most cases.

Split impulse hose

Rear Av spring and bottom plate.

Check the crankcase near the chain catcher for wear.

Other Than that there a good saw, a cracking little engine and easily repaired if there any issues. A lot of parts are updated but if you can you want to purchase a mark 2 machine but there are plenty of mark 1s still about with little problems

Steer away from a MK1 unless the MK2 grey bottom plate ( with strengthened spring mount ) has been fitted together with the barrel shaped AV spring . I have done this to my MK1 . Previously it " fell in half " when dropped on the strop as the AV spring stretched and the mount itself snapped . I removed the spark screen as a matter of course .
