Stump vice

All stump vices are shite.

Some are more shite than others I suppose. If you must have one (though I can't see why you'd ever need one?) make sure the screwy bit has a handle or lever, not just a thumb screw or it'll never ever clamp tight enough.

If you already have a thumb screw type vice, drill a hole through the flat bit, and put a small bolt through it for added leverage.

The above is true . ( I use pliers on the thumb screw ) Other than that I have found , dependent on wood species , the amount of wallop required to make it stay in the log differs . Some you need to clout it hard to make it stay and in others if you clout it hard it bounces out but will stay with a lighter tap .
