criteria of splicing

Hi guys,

 

I’m quite a freshman when it comes to splicing ropes and I was just wondering which criteria make a rope good to splice respectively which criteria make a rope a nightmare to splice? I hope you can help me with that

For me the only criteria that makes a rope good to splice or not is whether it is new or used. New rope is often far easier to splice than some old rope that a fat lump has been swinging around on for x amount of months or years.

 

 

So new Marlow is fine?

Worst......old gritty rope with a tight jacket

 

Best.......New clean rope and a nice warm place to work

I would say no to Marlow, the older version is horrible. Its final bury is done by machine, but it can be done by bhand

 

There is a newer version coming out which is much easier to splice by hand.

 

Start on some Yale XTC or New England Hi-vee.

A friend of mine has a XP*e from Edelrid laying around. Do you guys think a splice is doable on that one?

I also find the thinner ropes harder to splice, not much but it is a bit tricky. For instance, a 12mm sirius is easier than the 8mm sirius cord.

Ive spliced it, its got a very tight cover so not the easiest.

I'm struggling with burying the splice. It needs so much power to do. Do you ahve advice for me?
